Yoma 29

YOMA 27, 28, 29 (16 Shevat), 30 - have been dedicated by Gitle Bekelnitzky for the 38th Yahrzeit of Leah bas Mordechai Dovid and Chasya (Bikelnitzky), mother of her late husband, Simcha Bekelnitzky.

8) [line 30] MELIKAS HA'OF (OLAS HA'OF)
The offering of the Olas Ha'of consisted of four procedures:

(a) MELIKAH - On the Sovev (see Background to Yoma 22:13) of the Mizbe'ach, on the southeastern corner, the Kohen cuts the back of the neck of the bird with his right thumbnail, making sure to cut both Simanim (the trachea and the esophagus).
(b) MITZUY - The Kohen presses the cut part of the head and body of the bird onto the wall of the Mizbe'ach, above the Chut ha'Sikra (red line) that is located halfway up the Mizbe'ach.
(c) HAKTARAS HA'ROSH - The Kohen salts the head and throws it into the fire on the Mizbe'ach.
(d) HAKTARAS HA'GUF - The Kohen cuts out the crop and surrounding feathers of the bird (or, according to some Tana'im, the crop and the intestines -- Zevachim 65a) and throws them to the ash-pile at the side of the ramp of the Mizbe'ach. He then tears the bird apart (Shesiya), salts it, and throws it into the fire.
(a) When a Korban Minchah (flour offering) is offered, a Kohen must take off a Kometz (handful), which is burned upon the Mizbe'ach.
(b) A Kometz is the amount that can be held by the middle three fingers when they are pressed upon the palm. The Kohen puts his hand in the dough or baked goods and removes one handful. The excess of dough or baked goods that sticks out is then wiped off by the thumb and the smallest finger until only the Kometz remains.


(a) The Torah set specific times to do some of the Avodos of the Korbanos. For example, the Lechem ha'Panim (see Background to Yoma 24:9a) must be placed on the Golden Table in the Beis ha'Mikdash specifically on Shabbos, etc. If these Korbanos were offered before their appointed times, they do not become sanctified since they are "Mechuserei Zeman," i.e. they need to have had more time elapse before they should have been brought.
(b) Similarly, the slaughter and offering of all Korbanos, as well as the Kemitzah of the Korban Minchah (see above, entry #9) is only Kosher during the daytime, and not at night. If a Kohen slaughters an animal or does Melikah on a bird (see above, entry #8) at night, it is likewise considered Mechusar Zeman, and is Pasul. It follows, therefore, that the Kometz of a Korban Minchah that was separated at night should also not have become sanctified.
(c) However, according to the opinion that holds that Lailah Ein Mechusar Zeman (nighttime does not invalidate a Korban with regard to the Pesul of Mechusar Zeman), if the appointed time of the Korban is during the daytime, the previous night *is* called "Zemano," to the extent that the Avodah *becomes sanctified* as if it were performed during the day. With regard to whether the specific Avodah is Kesheirah or Pesulah, however, it is Pesulah, since the Avodah was done at night and not during the day. As a result, if a Kohen does Kemitzah during the night, the Kometz becomes sanctified and automatically Pesulah. He may not return the Kometz into the remainder of the Korban Minchah and do Kemitzah again during the day.
